HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-11-0040City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-11-0040 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 11-00087 Final Action Date: 1/27/2011 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, WITH ATTACHMENT(S), URGING THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO SUPPORT THE BAN ON THE POSSESSION BY CIVILIANS OF MILITARY STYLE GUN MAGAZINES AS PROPOSED IN HOUSE RESOLUTION 308 SPONSORED BY REPRESENTATIVE CAROLYN MCCARTHY OF NEW YORK (LARGE CAPACITY AMMUNITION FEEDING DEVICE ACT); DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS DESIGNATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, on January 8, 2011, nineteen people, including United States Representative Gabrielle Giffords and United States District Court Judge John Roll, were shot outside a Tucson, Arizona grocery store with a handgun equipped with a large capacity ammunition magazine; and WHEREAS, large capacity ammunition magazines have been used in numerous mass shootings, including in Tucson, Virginia Tech, Fort Hood, and Columbine; and WHEREAS, large capacity ammunition magazines are designed to enable shooting mass numbers of people quickly and efficiently without reloading, and they are not useful for hunting or self-defense; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges the members of the United States Congress to support the adoption of the a ban on the possession by civilians of military style gun magazines as proposed in House Resolution 308 sponsored by Representative Carolyn McCarthy of New York (Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act). Section 3. The City Clerk is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the members of the Florida Congressional Delegation. Section 4. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
