Purpose of item including recommended action: The purpose of this item is to accept a grant awarded from the Florida Department of Education for funding under the 21 st Century Community Learning Center Program in the approximate amount of $369,078, for the grant period of August 1, 2010 through July 31, 2011. 2. Historical information (e.g., # of years of implementation, schools involved and selection processs) • This is the fourth year of the five-year cycle; • The program is located at Lenora Braynon Smith Elementary School; • The program offers 200 students extended school day/year with a variety of learning opportunities in a safe environment and encourages the students' efforts to improve their academic achievement and enhance their physical, mental, and social wellness; and • This program targets students in the lowest quartile in reading and mathematics on the SAT-10, Level 1 and 2 students on the 2009 FCAT, Students with Disabilities (SWD), and ELL students. 3. What are the instructional implications and impact of this item? • To provide students with educational enrichment activities that extend, strengthen, and remediate academic progress to ensure high academic standards for all students; • To provide students with the foundations of learning skills (confidence, perseverance, organizational) needed to improve academic achievement and emotional well-being; • To provide home -learning and independent study time assisted by tutors and parental support; and • To provide recreational and creative expression time to promote teamwork and leadership skills. 4. What major District and or C&I initiative(s) does it support? Please specify. • The reading strategies are intertwined throughout the program, including but not limited to, math, writing, and science; • The various literacy activities will include journal/letter writing, Reader's Theater, group discussions, cultural enrichment, character education and service learning projects; • To intensify math and science through enrichment programs and hands-on activities; and • To provide opportunities to meet high academic standards for all students. 5. The Lead Teacher will align the 21st CCLC curriculum with the school's instructional focus calendars used throughout the school day/year. The Lead Teacher will also be responsible for the recruitment of both 21st CCLC students and staff. This position will also require the Lead Teacher to assist the Program Director with the collection, analysis and reporting of ongoing data pertaining to actively participating 21st CCLC students. Certified Teachers 76,820 20.81% Will provide the academic enrichment and instruction to actively participating 21st CCLC students during each of the 21st CCLC components: After School, Saturday Academy, and Summer Academy. Science Facilitator 4,819 1.31 % Will provide hands-on science activities for all 4th and 5th grade actively participating 21st CCLC students during the 21st CCLC After School and Summer Academy program. All activities provided will align to the District Pacing Guides and the school focus calendar. The Science Facilitator will support the goals and objectives of the 21st CCLC program. Hands-on science activities will be provided two times a week for After School throughout the program year and five days a week during the summer. Community Involvement Specialist 5,865 1.59% To assist the Parent Academy with providing ongoing workshops and training for parents of actively participating 21st CCLC students as part of the Parental Involvement program component. During After School and Summer Academy the CIS will also make parent contact and home visits based on —attendance, registration, behavior, parent volunteer, parent attendance in workshops, parent surveys, assist the Program Director in coordinating the parent -child workshops Cafeteria Manager 3,686 1.00% To receive and prepare breakfast, lunch and snacks during Saturday Academy and Summer Academy for actively participating 21st CCLC students. Security Monitor 6,685 1.81% To ensure the safety of actively participating 21st CCLC students by monitoring school grounds and hallways during each of the 21st CCLC components: after school programming, Saturdays, Winter Break and Summer Academy. Custodian 1,035 0.28% To maintain a clean and safe environment for actively participating 21st CCLC students during the Saturday Academy. The costs for custodial services solely supports the needs of 21st CCLC students during 21st CCLC activities. The Program Director will conduct bi-monthly 21st CCLC meetings with school administration, lead teachers and Community -Based Organizations. Artz-N-The Hood, Inc 16,000 A team of three professional instructors will provide 28 days of a highly creative arts curriculum encompassing etiquette/social protocol, basic foundations of classical ballet, West African dance/percussion master classes, social dance, history, geography, choreography, costuming and quarterly performances. YMCA 101,348 27.46% All actively participating 21st CCLC students will be assigned a YMCA counselor at a 20 to 1 ratio. YMCA counselors will oversee and supervise the implementation of each 21st CCLC component for After School, Saturday Academy, and Summer Academy. They will assist with the alignment of the 21st CCLC academic and enrichment curriculum with the school's instructional focus calendars used throughout the school year. Counselors will supervise their group to all activities, and will be responsible for: class registration, behavior management, attendance, parent communication and the safety of the children. Costs are estimated to include conference registration fee, travel, hotel and per diem. All conferences are for 21st CCLC purposes as approved and/or required by the FLDOE 21st CCLC program office. Saturday Academy, been considered in Field Trips 7,200 1.95% To provide transportation services to actively participating 21st CCLC students and chaperones/parents to attend educational and cultural field trips during the project year.
