The demonstrations were a show of strength for the February 20 movement, whose ral- lies over the past few months prompted King Mohammed VI to amend the constitution. "We are here to say no to the referendum and the constitution," said Oussama Khlkf, e of the founders of the movement, which brings together young, Facebook-using activists and members ofMorac- o's Islamist movement. "We want a parliamen- tary monarchy with a king that reigns, but does not rule and we want a real fight against cor ruption." Protesters have not called for the ouster of the 47-year-old king, who remains popular. Instead, they have called for the curtailing of bis absolute powers. • ITALY CLASHES REPORTED AT RAIL PROTEST ROME — Police clashed with thousands of demonstrators pro- testing a high-speed rail line linking Italy to Fran Officials said an- archists infiltrated the protest and were re- sponsible for injuring nearly 200 police offi- cers. It was not immedi- ately clear how serious the injuries were or how many protesters were injured. At least five people were arrested. President Giorgio Napolitano said police were right to react with "maximum" force to root out the anarchists from other protesters, who included families and 23 mayors from northwest Italy. Many residents say a high-speed train line would ruin the area, and they object to the dril- ling of a tunnel. • CANADA WILLIAM, KATE UNDETERRED QUEBEC CITY — Prince William and his bride, Kate, thrilled hundreds of adoring fans with an unsched- uled walkabout in a city that was the site of the key British victory in the conquest of the French — a historical event not forgotten by French-speaking sepa- ratists protesting ne arby. The newlyweds were on the fourth day of a nine -day trip to Canada. The Duke and Duch- ess of Cambridge, as they are officially known, encountered small butvocalprotests for the second straight day. However, well- wishers have far out- nu mbered protesters. "What they've seen in Quebec, in Montreal the last two days is, for them, just part of the rich fabric of Canada and in no way detracts from how much they respect and admire the country," said the cou- ple's spokesman, Miguel Head. "They've very much fallen in love with the country," he added. • FRANCE BAND MATES HONOR JIM MORRISON PARIS — Keyboardist Ray Manzarek and gui- tarist Robby Krieger, former members of The Doors, marked the 40th anniversary of the death of Jim Morrison by lighting candles at his grave. Morrison, the band's lead singer, died on July 2,1971, at age 27 of heart failure. MIAMI HERALD WIRE SERVICES SEIM xOMPREv/AP IN BENGHAZI: Turkey's Ahmet Davutoglu speaks to Ali al Essawi, the Libyan rebels' foreign minister. Turks recognize rebels, pledge $200M in aid • After balking at military action in Libya, Turkey — which has vast trade interests in the split nation — has thrown its support behind the rebels. BY SELCAN HACAOGLU Associated Press BENGHAZI, Libya — Turkey's foreign minister recognized Libya's rebel leaders as the country's le- gitimate representatives and promised them an addi- tional $200 million in aid during a visit Sunday. The visit by Poreien Min- ister Ahmet Davutoglu sig- naled a further policy shift for Ankara. -flukey, a key re- gional power, had initially balked at the idea of military action in Libya, but as a NA- TO member is now support- ing the alliance's air spikes there. Turkish companies were involved inconstruc- tion projects worth billions of dollars in Libya before the February outbreak of a Liby- an upris- ing that has evolved into a protracted armed conflict. Davutoglu met with Mus- tafa Abdul-Jahl, chairman of the rebels' National Transi- tional Council, in a heavily - guarded government build- ing in the city of Benghazi, the rebel's main stronghold in eastern Libya. He later ad- dressed a news conference with Ali al Essawi, who serves as the rebels' foreign minister The Turkish visitor said his country recognires the rebel leaders as the legiti- mate representatives of the Libyan people. Several other countries, including Prance, Qatar and Italy, have previ- ously recognized the rebels. Essawi noted that "Tur- key has given us political as well as financial support and humanitarian aid." Turkey has already grant- ed the Libyan opposition $100 million in aid and promised an additional $200 million. Same of the money is to be used to im- prove the infrastructure of Benghazi and rehabilitate its airport Temel Kotil, chief execu- tive officer of the Turkish Airlines, said his company would resume flights to Benghazi as as the se- curity situation nimproves. Mahmoud fibril, one of the rebel leaders, will pay a two- day visit to Turkey on Tues- day to discuss the promised aid in more detail. "For us, the destinyofLib- ya is the same as the destiny of Turkey," said Davutoglu. "I expressed our solidarity and commitment" Davutoglu's trip to Ben- ghazi on Sunday is the most powerful signal that Turkey, which has vast trade inter- ests in Libya, is throwing its weight behind the Libyan opposition despite its long- time relations with Gadbali. The foreign minister said he hopes the Libya crisis can be solved peacefully this month, before the start of the Muslimfasting monthof Ramadan at the beginning of August. The fighting has split Libya into a rebel -con- trolled east and a Gadbafi- run west. Turkey has c-alledon Gad- bari to withdraw from pow- er and pave the way for "de- mocracy and transparency." "It was so urgent I saw her when she was about to fall and rushedthere, and af- ter tens of seconds she fell off," CCTV quoted Wu as saying.
