Horse Retirement
SUBJECT

ENCLOSURES:
I am respectfully requesting to retire a mounted horse named BigScho. He is a well -trained horse;
however, behavioral difficulties prevent this equestrian from being suited for the Mounted Unit.
BigScho has a tendency to become hyper and unruly in patrol formation. This is a safety issue that
we have tried to address over the last 23 months, with little success.
In addition to the horse's behavior, he is too large for the Unit. He is 17'2" tall and the average
height in the Mounted Patrol is 16' l". He is thin, although he eats twice as much as the others
which creates added expense. This horse is better suited for ring and show work, as opposed to
traffic duties.
Sergeant Rafael Toirac attempted to contact the previous owner various times by phone with no
luck. Also a certified letter was sent to the only address we have, which was returned and copies
are being submitted in this package.
With permission, BigScho is being adopted by Officer David Patton who was the person
responsible for bringing this horse to the unit in September 2007. He has been working with this
horse for the last year and a half. He will be keeping the horse at a stable in the Redlands which
consists of 5 acres. Sgt. Rafael Toirac visited the stables and agrees that is suitable for properly
maintaining this horse. Officer David Patton is a good horseman and knows how to maintain this
horse appropriately.
