Police: Arrests averted
another terror attack
From Miami Herald Wire Services
ATHENS — Greek police officials said Sunday that
they bad averted an imminent terrorist attack by
arresting six people believed linked to domestic ter-
rorist activities, including two suspected members of
a group that had claimed responsibility for letter
bombs sent to embassies in Athens and foreign lead-
ers last month.
A series of police raids on homes in Athens and
other Greek cities over the weekend also turned up
weapons and explosives the police believe may have
been intended for use in the attack. The weapons did
not appear to match those used in earlier attacks in
Greece, and the target or targets were not clear.
The spokesman said two of the six suspects had
been arrested after witnesses saw them Saturday
night outside a house in a suburb of Athens carrying
suspicious -looking rucksacks, which were found to
contain two submachine guns and other weapons.

RESULTS SEEM CERTAIN IN RUNOFF VOTE
CAIRO —Egypt held runoff parliamentary elec-
tions Sunday that were considered certain to hand
President Hosni Mubarak's ruling party an over-
whelming victory after the two main opposition
groups decided to boycott in protest of alleged fraud
in the first round.
The vote, for 50 percent of parliament's 508
elected seats, was marred by reports of armed clashes
and allegations of widespread vote buying in in Cairo.
With a large-scale crackdown ahead of the vote
that included arrest sweeps, Egypt's ruling establish-
ment appeared determined to purge th 1 ge t pp
sition group, the fundamentalist Muslim Brother-
hood, from the next legislature. Both the Brotherhood
and the other key opposition group, the liberal Wafd
party, boycotted Sunday's runoffs.

• A suicide bomber
killed two NATO troops
and at least two others
at an army base.
BY RAMIM FAIEZ
Associated Press
KABUL — A Taliban
suicide bomber blew him-
self up next to a string of
shop stalls inside an east-
ern Afghan army base on
Sunday, killing two NATO
b d t
least two civilians, officials
said.
The Taliban claimed
responsibility, saying it
was a suicide attack by a
Taliban sleeper agent who
had joined the Afghan
army so that he would be
able to kill foreigners.
The explosion occurred
in an area of the Garden
army base where shop-
keepers sell goods to both
Afghan soldiers and their
partnered NATO troops,
said Rohullah Samon, a
spokesman for the Paktia
provincial government.
NATO said in a state-
ment that two members of
the military coalition died
in the suicide attack. They
did not identify the victims
or give their nationalities.
Most of the NATO forces
in Gardez are American.
Two shopkeepers were
killed and at least 18 people
were wounded in the blast,
Samon said. He said he did
not have information on
any military deaths.
A Taliban spokesman
said in an e-mail sent to
media outlets that the
civilians who were killed
were not innocent because
they had collaborated with
government and NATO
forces.
"They were at the ser-
vice of the foreigners,"
Zabiullah Mujahid said.
In southern Afghani-
stan, another NATO ser-
vice member was killed in
an insurgent attack while
an Afghan employee of an
Americancontractor was
shot ain the city of
Lashkar Gab, officials said.
NATO did not provide
any further details on the
dead service member.
The victim in the Lash-
kar Gah shooting worked
for International Relief and
Development, said Daoud
Ahmadi, a spokesman for
the Helmand provincial
government. The com-
pany, lmown as IRD, works
on infrastructure and other
aid projects for the U.S.
government.
The killing comes after
an attempted attack on the
IRD office in March during
which two would-be sui-
cide attackers tried to
storm the building.
Those attackers were
killed by security guards
before they could enter the
building.
