R-1128-08 Agenda Item No. 14 (A) (2 ) 10-21-08 RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING N.W. 15TH AVENUE FROM N.W. 73RD STREET TO N.W. 79TH STREET AS "REV. DR. GILBERT S. SMITH AVENUE"; URGING THE CITY OF MIAMI TO CODESIGNATE N.W. 15TH AVENUE FROM N.W. 62ND STREET TO N.W. 71ST STREET AS "REV. DR. GILBERT S. SMITH AVENUE" WHEREAS, Dr. Gilbert S. Smith is a native of Miami where he has been a reverend for more than 50 years; and WHEREAS, Dr. Smith has served as founder and CEO of the Apostolic Evangelistic Association for 38 years; and WHEREAS, Dr. Smith's ministry has fed the poor and homeless from its distribution center twice a week for nearly two decades; and WHEREAS, Dr. Smith's ministry also includes jail and prison ministries, and his evangelical endeavors have reached Belize, Grenada, Haiti, Kenya and Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, the enrichment center run by the Apostolic Evangelistic Association offers mentoring programs for children and free tutoring for the FCAT; and WHEREAS, Dr. Smith has offered hope to many more South Floridians over the last two decades through his "Hope for Today" television broadcast every Sunday evening; and WHEREAS, N.W. 15th Avenue from N.W. 73`d Street to N.W. 79th Street is a county road located in County Commission District 2, and N.W. 15th Avenue from N.W. 62nd Street to N.W. 71St Street is a City of Miami road, NOW, THEREFORE, BE .IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISS1ONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Agenda Item No. 14 (A) (2 ) Page No. 2 Section 1. Finds that Reverend Dr. Gilbert Smith has made a direct significant lifetime contribution to this community. Section 2. By three -fifths vote of the Board Members present, approves the codesignation of N.W. 15th Avenue from N.W. 73rd Street to N.W. 79th Street as "Rev. Dr. Gilbert Smith Avenue". Section 3. Urges the City of Miami to codesignate N.W. 15th Avenue from N.W. 62nd Street to N.W. 71st Street as "Rev. Dr. Gilbert Smith Avenue". Section 4. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the City of Miami Mayor, the Chair and Members of the Miami City Commission, the United States Postal Service, the Traffic Signals and Signs Division of the Public Works Department and Land Development Division of the Public Works Department, the Miami -Dade Police Department, and the Miami -Dade Fire Rescue Department. The Prime Sponsor of the foregoing resolution is Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle. It was offered by Commissioner Dorrin D. Rolle seconded by Commissioner Audrey M. This resolution shall become effective ten (10) days after the date of its adoption unless vetoed by the Mayor, and if vetoed, shall become effective only upon an override by this Board.
