ROMAN WAY;" FURTHER DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO INSTRUCT THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS TO WORK WITH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY AND ANY OTHER AGENCIES TO ENSURE THAT ALL CO -DESIGNATION PROCEDURES ARE COMPLETED BEFORE THE END OF CALENDAR YEAR 2008, IN ANTICIPATION OF A CEREMONY DEDICATING "THE MOST REVEREND AGUSTIN A. ROMAN WAY " TO MARK THE RETIRED AUXILIARY BISHOP OF MIAMI'S 50TH YEAR IN THE PRIESTHOOD; FURTHER DIRECTING THE TRANSMITTAL OF A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. WHEREAS, this Resolution directs the City Manager to instruct the Public Works Department to work with Miami -Dade County and any other agencies to ensure that all co -designation procedures are completed before the end of calendar year 2008, in anticipation of a ceremony dedicating "The Most Reverend Agustin A. Roman Way," to mark the retired auxiliary bishop of Miami's 50th year in the priesthood; and WHEREAS, Bishop Roman came to South Florida after being expelled, along with 132 other Cuban priests, from Cuba by the communist regime; and WHEREAS, Bishop Roman raised funds for the construction of the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity on Biscayne Bay, where he still works as director as the beacon for exiles from many nations; and WHEREAS, Bishop Roman's resume is attached, in keeping with the City Commission's recent vote to allow street co -designations for living people of extremely high character and civic contribution; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission urges Miami -Dade County to codesignate South Miami Avenue from Southwest 17th Avenue to U.S. 1, Miami, Florida, as "The Most Reverend Agustin A. Roman Way." Section 3. The City Manager is directed to instruct the Public Works Department to work with Miami -Dade County and any other agencies to ensure that all co -designation procedures are completed before the end of calendar year 2008, in anticipation of a ceremony dedicating "The Most Reverend Agustin Roman Way," to mark the retired auxiliary bishop of Miami's 50th year in the City of Miami Page 1 of 2 Printed On: 9/16/2008 File Number: 08-01095 priesthood and to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the City's Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue, Solid Waste,, and also to the Miami -Dade County Public Works Department and the United States Postal Service. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.{1} APPROVED AS TO FORM AND CORRECTNESS: JULIE O. BRU '" CITY ATTORNEY Footnotes: {1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted.
