HomeMy WebLinkAboutSubmittal-Commissioner SanchezA RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION SUPPORTING AMENDMENT 6 ON THE NOVEMBER 4, 2008 BALLOT, WHICH WILL HELP PRESERVE WORKING WATERFRONTS AND THE JOBS THEY SUPPORT. WHEREAS, Florida's working waterfronts are a critical link connecting people With Florida's rich fish, wildlife, and other natural resources for commercial and recreational activities that are highly important to Florida's economy and the cultural character of the State, and WHEREAS, working waterfronts include properties and facilities that provide access for water -dependent commercial and recreational activities and generally provide access for the public to the navigable waters of the State. WHEREAS, the projected growth of Florida's population over the next 50 years and other environmental and economic factors will undoubtedly present extreme challenges, and WHEREAS, those challenges, if riot addressed, threaten to erode the rich cultural heritage associated with working waterfronts and good jobs they sustain on the Miami River, Biscayne Bay and waterways across the state. WHEREAS, it is beyond the means of the government of the City, County or State to purchase and preserve lands essential to maintaining working waterfronts that may be subject to land use changes in the years to come, and WHEREAS, a proposed addition to the Florida Constitution - - Amendment 6, to be on the ballot for Florida's voters' approval during the November 4, 2008 election - - would offer a meaningful solution to this issue by providing for tax incentives for landowners who wish to maintain properties in working waterfront uses, and WHEREAS, passage of Amendment 6 requires that 60 percent of voters cast ballots in favor of its adoption: NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Miami City Commission that it supports Amendment 6 and urges voters to approve its passage to help preserve working waterfronts for the benefit of future generations of Floridians.
