RESOLUTION URGING THE CITY OF MIAMI TO DESIGNATE S.W. 35TH AVENUE FROM S.W. 4TH STREET TO S.W. 13TH STREET AS OLGA Y TONY AVENUE WHEREAS, Olga Chorens and Tony Alvarez ("Olga y Tony"), were the Cuban singing sweethearts during the 1940s, and after getting married in 1945, the couple went on to be labeled "La Pareja Ideal" (The Ideal Couple) for over six decades; and WHEREAS, from 1951 to 1959, Olga y Tony had their own television and radio shows in Cuba, and were given the title of "Mr. and Mrs. Cuban Television"; and WHEREAS, Olga y Tony fled Cuba in 1963 bound for New York and Puerto Rico, where the couple performed on television from 1965 to 1972; and WHEREAS, for the past 20 years "Olga y Tony" lived in South Florida where they maintained a large fan base and their voices were heard every Saturday morning on radio and on the television show "El Show de Olga y Tony"; and WHEREAS, in 1999, Olga y Tony were awarded a Star on the "Calle Ocho" Walk of Fame; and WHEREAS, Olga and Tony were married for 56 years and raised two daughters, Olga and Lissette; and WHEREAS, daughter Lissette became a teen singing sensation in Puerto Rico, and later married Cuban salsa singer Willy Chirino; and WHEREAS, Olga currently lives in Miami, losing Tony to illness in March 19, 2001; and 3 Agenda Item No. 11(A) (10 ) Page No. 2 WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor Olga Chorens and the memory of Tony Alvarez with a road designation; and WHEREAS, this proposed road designation is located in the City of Miami and in County Commission District 7, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this Board: Section 1. Urges the City of Miami to designate S.W. 35th Avenue from S.W. 4th Street to S.W. 13th Street as Olga y Tony Avenue. Section 2. Directs the Clerk of the Board to transmit certified copies of the resolution to the Mayor and members of the City of Miami Commission. The foregoing resolution was sponsored by Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez and offered by Commissioner was seconded by Commissioner vote was as follows: Bruno Barbara J. Jose "Pepe" Diaz Carlos A. This resolution shall become effective ten (10) days after the date of its adoption unless vetoed by the Mayor, and if vetoed, shall become effective only upon an override by this Board.
