HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-08-0410City of Miami Legislation Resolution of Condolence: R-08-0410 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 08-00709a Final Action Date: 7/10/2008 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND SINCEREST CONDOLENCES ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF MIAMI AND ITS CITIZENS TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF RAULALARCON SR. UPON HIS UNTIMELY DEATH. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") grieves the untimely death of Raul Alarcon Sr., a Cuban exile, pioneer, and founder of the Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc., a Spanish -language communications and entertainment empire in the United States; and WHEREAS, Raul Alarcon Sr. was born in Ciego de Avila, Cuba and became a well-known radio entrepreneur who owned 14 radio stations; and WHEREAS, Raul Alarcon Sr. re-established his radio career in the United States and in 1983, purchased his first radio station in New York, which became the start of a radio, television, and online venture that made the Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. the largest publicly traded Hispanic -controlled media company in the country; and WHEREAS, due to his vision of creating a radio company owned by Hispanics for Hispanics, Raul Alarcon Sr. helped motivate and provide opportunities to other Hispanics in the communications industry; and WHEREAS, the Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. presently consists of 21 radio stations in the country's largest Hispanic markets, is now headed by Chairman/President/CEO Raul Alarcon Jr., and operates four of the eight top -ranked Spanish -language stations in the country, including South Florida; and WHEREAS, Raul Alarcon Sr., a visionary who was one of the craftsmen of Spanish -language radio in the United States and who served as chairman of the board until 1999, was awarded the Medallas de Cortez Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hispanic radio industry's top honor, in 2008. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The authorities of the City of Miami, in the State of Florida, on behalf of our citizens, pause in our official deliberations to express our deepest sympathy to his wife, Alma, his son, Raul Alarcon Jr., and to record for posterity this tribute to the passion and lifelong dedication of Raul Alarcon Sr. (1926-2008). Section 2.
