For Explorer Program

FILE :
I am requesting refunding of the Miami Police Explorer Program. This is an outstanding program that
benefits the youth in our community. The Explorer Program is educational, career, and community service
oriented. The Explorer Program was last funded in 2006 in the amount of $23,000.00.
The purpose and objectives of the Miami Police Explorer Program is to provide the young men and women
of the Miami area an opportunity to gain an insight into a career in law enforcement, and to stimulate
interest and give consideration to further training and education for a law enforcement career. We wish to
instill within the Explorer a genuine wish to demonstrate desirable habits, attitudes, and practice as
contributing members of society. We want them to experience as many phases of law enforcement possible.
These phases will assist them in selecting the area they would best excel and be happiest in, and work
toward the development of high moral character, good citizenship, and a strong healthy body.
After being accepted into the program, Police Explorers undergo training in a basic explorer law
enforcement academy. This fonnal training is followed by classes once a week at Miami Police Stations.
After they pass tests of their knowledge, they continue their training on ride along with different sections of
the Police Department. Explorers also assist police officers in crowd control, traffic and pedestrian control,
parades, sporting events, bicycle races, walk-a-thons, Gun Buy Backs, and many other public events.
The Explorers fulfill an important role in the drug awareness and prevention movement .by informing the
youth of the community about perils of drug abuse. This knowledge is disseminated through classroom
presentations and distribution of drug information materials at community events.
The Explorer Program also serves as a great recruiting tool. Twenty-five (25) of our explorers have gone on
to become police officers and staff members with the Miami Police Department and other law enforcement
agencies throughout South Florida. We would like to see this very important program continue for years to
come.
Attached, please find the proposed program budget in the amount of $64,706.00.
