HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-08-0288City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-08-0288 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 08-00629 Final Action Date: 5/22/2008 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION PLEDGING IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF CUBA SEEKING POLITICAL FREEDOM AND BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. WHEREAS, the people of Cuba have suffered under a totalitarian dictatorship for nearly half a century; and WHEREAS, countless innocent Cubans have been detained, imprisoned, tortured, maimed and executed for the simple act of exercising their basic human rights; and WHEREAS, on May 21, 2008, The White House hosted an event in solidarity with the people of Cuba, focusing on the plight of prisoners of conscience and the lack of political freedom in Cuba; and WHEREAS, the free world has an obligation to pressure the Cuban government to allow its citizens to grant internationally recognized civil, political and economic rights and freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights, to which Cuba has recently become a signatory; and WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has been a beacon of hope to hundreds of thousands of hardworking, high -achieving people exiled from Cuba; and WHEREAS, the City also is a harbor of heartache for Cuban Americans who have been separated from family of Cuba, who have had families die at sea trying to reach American freedom, and who grieve daily for the atrocities committed on their countrymen each day they live under a despotic regime; and WHEREAS, the United States Department of State continues to document horrific human rights abuses perpetrated on the Cuban people by the Cuban government.; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The members of the Miami City Commission pledge in solidarity with the White House and Democracy -loving people the United States who are working to bring and end to hideous human rights violations and a beginning of God-given freedom for the people of Cuba. Section 3. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
