A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION STANDING
IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF CUBA SEEKING
POLITICAL FREEDOM AND BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS
WHEREAS, The people of Cuba have suffered under a totalitarian dictatorship
for nearly half a century.
WHEREAS, Countless innocent Cubans have been detained, imprisoned,
tortured, maimed and executed for the simple act of exercising their basic human
rig hts.
WHEREAS, The White House yesterday (May 21) hosted an event in solidarity
with the people of Cuba, focusing on the plight of prisoners of conscience and
the lack of political freedom of the island.
WHEREAS, The free world has an obligation to pressure the Cuban government
to allow its citizens to enjoy internationally recognized civil, political and
economic rights and freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights; as well as the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights, to which
Cuba has recently become a signatory.
WHEREAS, The City of Miami has been a beacon of hope to hundreds of
thousands of hardworking, high -achieving people exiled from Cuba.
WHEREAS, The City of Miami also is a harbor of heartache for Cuban
Americans who have been separated from family on the island, who have had
families die at sea trying to reach American freedom, and who grieve daily for the
atrocities committed on their countrymen each day they live under a despotic
regime.
WHEREAS, The U.S. Department of State continues to document horrific human
rights abuses perpetrated on the Cuban people by the Cuban government.
NOW, THEREFORE the members of the Miami City Commission stand in
solidarity with the White House and Democracy -loving people the United States
who are working to bring and end to hideous human rights violations and a
beginning of God-given freedom for the people of Cuba..
