RESOLUTION NO. R-1347-07
RESOLUTION URGING THE CITY OF MIAMI TO
CODESIGNATE NW 59TH AVENUE FROM WEST
FLAGLER STREET TO NW 7TH STREET AS
RAMON AND POLITA GRAU ALSINA AVENUE
WHEREAS, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina were born in Cuba to a family devoted
to promote democracy and freedom; and
WHEREAS, after Communism took over in Cuba, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina, along
with the Catholic Church and Monsignor Bryan O. Walsh, started Operation Peter Pan
(Pedro Pan) in 1961, an organization dedicated to the rescue of Cuban children of all creeds
and races; and
WHEREAS, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina, together with the Catholic Welfare
Bureau, were able to bring out of Cuba between 1961 and 1965 more than 14,000 children
without their parents; and
WHEREAS, 28,000 visas were given to parents of the children in order to reunite the
families; and
WHEREAS, in 1965, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina were accused of being the
brains behind Operation Peter Pan (Pedro Pan), tried, condemned to 30 years each in Cuban
jails, and detained; and
WHEREAS, Polita Grau Alsina was released after serving 13 years with the
condition that she leave Cuba immediately; and

WHEREAS, upon her arrival in Miami, Florida, she continued working to seek the
release of Cuban political prisoners and the return of freedom and democracy to Cuba; and
WHEREAS, Ramon Grau Alsina served over 21 years of the 30 year prison term;
WHEREAS, thanks to the intervention of the Catholic Conference of the United
States, the Bishops of Florida and Monsignor Bryan O. Walsh, they were able to leave Cuba
and reunite with their families in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Ramon Grau Alsina passed away on November 3, 1998 and Polita Grau
Alsina passed away on March 21, 2000; and
WHEREAS, this Board would like to honor them by having NW 59th Avenue from
NW 7th Street to West Flagler Street codesignated as Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina Avenue;
and
WHEREAS, this proposed codesignation is located in the City of Miami and in
County Commission District 6,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
Section 1. The Board urges the City of Miami to codesignate NW 59th Avenue
from NW 7th Street to West Flagler Street as Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina Avenue.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is directed to send certified copies of this
Resolution to the Mayor, members of the Miami City Commission and City Manager.

The foregoing resolution was sponsored by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa and offered
by Commissioner

The Chairperson thereupon declared the resolution duly passed and adopted this 4th
day of December , 2007. This resolution shall become effective ten (10) days after the date
of its adoption unless vetoed by the Mayor, and if vetoed, shall become effective only upon
an override by this Board.
