A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING DEEPEST
SYMPATHY AND SINCEREST CONDOLENCES ON BEHALF OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI AND ITS CITIZENS TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF ISRAEL "CACHAO"
LOPEZ UPON HIS UNTIMELY DEATH.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") grieves the untimely death of Israel "Cachao" Lopez, a
brilliant musician, bassist, composer, conductor, and artist; and
WHEREAS, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, known as "Cachao," was celebrated as the inventor of the
mambo rhythm and as a salsa pioneer; and
WHEREAS, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, the pre-eminent Cuban bassist, ranked among the 20th
century's most remarkable musicians due to his supple rhythms and fluid melodies, and was one of
the most important figures in Latin music; and
WHEREAS, Israel "Cachao" Lopez was a Grammy Award -winning musician who wrote hundreds
of songs for bands and orchestras and won several Grammy Awards for both his own work and his
contributions on albums by Latin music stars; and
WHEREAS, Israel "Cachao" Lopez, with his unadulterated love and passion for music, will be
sorely missed as the music industry has lost a true pioneer, but whose contributions to Latin music
will be everlasting.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The authorities of the City of Miami, in the State of Florida, on behalf of our citizens,
pause in our official deliberations to express our deepest sympathy to his family, colleagues and
friends, and to record for posterity this tribute to the memory of Israel "Cachao" Lopez, a true pioneer
in Latin music (1918-2008).
Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor.{1}

days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become
effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City
