Purpose of Item: It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and the City Commission adopt the attached resolution authorizing the City Manager to ratify the acceptance of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) grant award to the City of Miami, a total of $400,000 in Brownfield Property Assessment Funding (Please see attached for continued Purpose of Item) Background Information: In December of 2006, the Department of Economic Development submitted an application for an EPA Assessment Grant on the City's behalf The neighborhoods of Allapattah and Wynwood were selected as the target areas for this grant award due to the heavy presence of industrial and commmercial activity, and in which residential housing is present directly adjacent to and within the industrial and commercial district. In May of 2007, the EPA officially awarded the City of Miami its second overall assessment award, in which the Allapattah and Wynwood Grant will follow and replicate assessment activity and data collection of the 2004 EPA Assessment Grant for the Little Haiti Industrial District. Attachment; Purpose of Item: It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and the City Commission adopt the attached resolution authorizing the City Manager to ratify the acceptance of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) grant award to the City of Miami, a total of $400,000 in Brownfield Property Assessment Funding within the Allapattah and Wynwood industrial and commercial areas, of which $200,000 will be used to assess potential hazardous substance contaminated sites, and $200,000 to assess potential petroleum contaminated sites within the designated areas, for the purpose of identifying likely contaminants and promoting the cleanup of contaminated properties for an overall healthy and sustainable community and promote redevelopment and re -use of inactive properties, by identifying potentially contaminated and known contaminated sites, and producing an inventory into a public database that will be accessible with GIS capabilities.
