Bayshore Drive Dear Mayor Diaz and City Commissioners: While the gate at 5725 N, Bayshore Drive may not meet the requirements of the city code, I believe it is in the spirit of the Morningside Historic Architectural District. Going above and beyond what most would consider its aesthetically pleasing quality, the gate was designed and crafted by the designer of the house's original front door, matching the style of the door. This, along with the gate's open, transparent quality, celebrates rather than detracts from the unique character of the Morningside neighborhood. I urge you to support the applicant's appeal of the HEP Board decision, and also thank your administration for guarding the integrity of Miami's priceless historic reso -s by bringing this matter to your attention. I have visited with my friend David Wallack on occasions and have missed his entry way for that entryway has to be one of the most secluded in that neighborhood . The luxuriance of his garden is a testament of his fondness for tropicals. If it was not for the shimmering art work on his gate I would pass the property, fact that has ocurred on several occasion. When David purchased the property it was in great need of repair and restoration. But from moment go the most singular aspect to the property ie the signature artwork on the large entrance door was to be the directing design detail from which all the transformatiom would take place. This is just an inkling of the respect David holds for the arts and the artists that create it. He sought and found artist Kim Brandell and from then on, ensued a transformatiom program that has the house as showcase for the arts . Th seaside facade is adorned by a large frieze by the artist as well as the garage doors. It followed that the gates would receive the same treatment. All in the name of cohesion and respect of the historical legacy of the property. But to me what is truly singular about the whole is the fact that the architecture, the art are meshed in quite a gracefull manner with the surrounding luxuriance of the greenery. That is most significant and is certainly to be lauded for nature is what is best served in this house Edouard Duval Carrie Original message from <dw@mangostropicalcafe.com>: Dear Eduard, My appeal hearing before the Miami City Commission for my Copper Front Gate is tomorrow afternoon. As you may or may not know....the board that heard it before turned it down. I need a short but strong letter from you ,along with your resume attached, stating your feeling of the gate being based upon a "picket" design and very compatible with the historic nature of the neighborhood being the sunrise and palm trees. Also, very important, is that the gate is by the same artist, Kim Brandell, who did the origin al front door to the house (1969-70), and therefore is in perfect historical context to the property itself. Lastly, that there are many gates in morningside that are artistic in nature with this gate being quite "artistically significant" to the community at large, and most certainly improves the value of the community. Thank you Eduard. I do need this tomorrow morning if possible.
