Subject: The Little House
My husband and I were the third owner of the Little House,
from 1969 to 1988. It was a great experience to live in
such a wonderful English cottage. We tried to maintain
it in an appropriate manner to maintain it's style.
Friends and family enjoyed the ambiance and the
wonderful porch where we usually garthered.
It would be a pity to loose such a unique home and we
urge the commission to maintain it's present status.
Sincerely,
Ernest and Eva Swift

Joan, please tell the board or its reps. that i am 100 % behind your efforts at
designation. far too little of our historic housing stock has any protection at all
against rapacious developers.
thanks. paul

Dear City Commissioner:
As President of The Barnacle Society, I treasure the significance of Historic
Preservation. Preservation of historic houses has been recognized both in Coral Gables
and Miami Beach, but sorely neglected in The City of Miami.
The Little House was chosen for Historic Designation due to the fact that it meets the
criteria. The vote of the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board for Historic
Designation was unanimous.
Please help our neighbors here in Coconut Grove, where the first International Airport
was right here in City Hall years after "The Little House" was built. "The Little house
was 33 years old when the Pan American Miami International Airport was built in 1935.
To quote from the Report on the Potential Designation completed by the Preservation
Officer of the City of Miami, "The residence at 3848 Little Avenue is one of the few
remaining wood vernacular structures that possess much of its original fabric and
detailing. This "storybook" cottage represents a distinctive type which illustrates skillful
craftsmanship and use of form."
I support Historic Preservation of this house and request that you do so as well.
Sincerely,
President

Dear Miami City Commission:
I am writing in support of the historical designation of "The
Little House" at 3848 Little Avenue.
As a great granddaughter of the Coconut Grove pioneer
Ralph Middleton Munroe of The Barnacle house, I believe
that it is our responsibility to retain the history and
character of what makes Coconut Grove special.
I personally support historic preservation by maintaining our
home in Coconut Grove which was built in 1919 and believe
that the charm and uniqueness of our home can never be
duplicated in modern construction.
Please help us keep the Grove special by preserving this
historic home.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Mary Munroe Seabrook

Subject: Save our architectural legacy
Letter to the Editor: TIME SENSITIVE
This morning (Friday Nov.9) I must urge the Miami Commissioners (scheduled to meet
at Dinner Key) to uphold the historic designation of the venerable old House at 3843
Little Avenue, Coconut Grove. Not only does it meet all the criteria to be designated and
protected as an historic site but it is important as a landmark house representative of the
vernacular architecture of early settler days in Coconut Grove. You need to protect it.
I have known this house for some 50 years and admired its original craftsmanship, its
architectural features, which speak of the Florida vernacular style. It was built in the days
before mechanization when craftsmen hand -built with native materials (oolitic rock,
Dade County Pine, Palmetto pilings).
It is appropriate to protect this venerable house that is more than a century old from the
Appeal to de -designate. Symbolically, it is the oldest structure in Ye Little Wood and was
built by pioneer William Little in 1902 whose name was given to the Street. Throughout
Miami and the Grove, too much of our architectural heritage has been unprotected for
some years so that lacking historic designation, much of our historic legacy has been
erased from our landscape.
Today is a good time to step forward and vote to save a piece of our past. People who
love this city, long-term tax payers, new residents, visitors, and tourists will appreciate
your vision in saving our fast vanishing architectural legacy even as we build a city of the
future.

Subject: Re: VILLAGERS: The Little House
To Whom it May Concern,
A Historic Designation is a commitment to the History of a City, a Town a Culture. Once
it has been so endowed on a property, the owners should feel honored to have possession
of a historical gem.
In this day and age of superficiality and instant gratification, what better reminder of
more important things of value: a commitment to our heritage, to our culture, to the
richness of the fiber of our history, and needs to serve as a reminder to my sons and the
sons and daughters of our county, that even imperfect things , because of the patina of
age, and the richness of the history that has imbued Ye Little Woods with an honored
position in the stage of our lives, need to be protected and not discarded for a shinier, new
oh no not one more MacMansion structure.
Please do not overturn the Historical Designation. It not only will destroy the small gem ,
but may also establish a precedent by which other Historically Designated places may fall
victims to avarice.
Sincerely,
Carmen Ortiz MD,
Mother of four sons and future voters: Albert 23, Allan, 20, William 14 and Tom age 11.
Member of the Villagers, and of the Young Patronesses of the Opera, as well as
voter in district 107.

Dear Sir/Madam,
This letter is sent to you expressing my interest in seeing that the Historic Designation
given to 3848 Little Avenue in April 2007 not be reversed during the appeal process taking
place on November 9, 2007.
The charm and historic value of "The Little House" was one of the factors in our choice of
Ye Little Wood as the ideal location for us to take up residence.
Thank you in advance for your kind consideration.
Sincerely,
Michelle D. Merlin
