A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING ITS DESIRE TO
THE MIAMI STREET CODESIGNATION REVIEW COMMITTEE THAT IT WOULD
LIKE TO CODESIGNATE NORTHWEST 59TH AVENUE FROM WEST FLAGLER
STREET TO NORTHWEST 7TH STREET, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "RAMON AND
POLITA GRAU ALSINAAVENUE," AND THAT THE REVIEW COMMITTEE TAKE ALL
ACTION NECESSARY TO BEGIN TO EFFECTUATE SUCH CODESIGNATION.
WHEREAS, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina were bon in Cuba to a family devoted to promote
democracy and freedom; and
WHEREAS, after Communism took over in Cuba, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina, along with the
Catholic Church and Monsignor Bryan 0. Walsh, started Operation Peter Pan (Pedro Pan) in 1961, an
organization dedicated to the rescue of Cuban children of all creeds and races; and
WHEREAS, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina, together with the Catholic Welfare Bureau, were able
to bring out of Cuba between 1961 and 1965 more than 14,000 children without their parents; and
WHEREAS, 28,000 visas were given to parents of the children in order to reunite the families; and
WHEREAS, in 1965, Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina were accused of being the brains behind the
Operation Peter Pan (Pedro Pan), were tried and condemned to 30 years each in Cuban jails, and
detained; and
WHEREAS, Polita Grau Alsina was released after serving 13 years with the condition that she
leave Cuba immediately;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Miami City Commission expresses its desire to the Miami Street Codesignation
Review Committee that it would like to codesignate Northwest 59th Avenue from West Flagler Street
to Northwest 7th Street, Miami, Florida, as "Ramon and Polita Grau Alsina Avenue," and that the
review committee take all action necessary to begin to effectuate such codesignation.
Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of
the Mayor.{1}

{1} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar
days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall
become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
