A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION, ACCEPTING THE
RECOMMENDATION OF THE DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY TO
REQUEST THAT THE MIAMI PARKING AUTHORITY CREATE A SPECIAL
PARKING PROGRAM ON WEEKENDS DURING THE HOLIDAY SHOPPING
SEASON THAT OFFERS FREE PARKING AS AN INCENTIVE TO DRAW
CUSTOMERS TO SHOP WITHIN THE CBD.

WHEREAS, the Miami City Commission recognizes that Downtown Miami is a
key economic engine for the City and that its shops and businesses are in intense
competition with suburban malls and retail centers where parking is free; and
WHEREAS, the holiday shopping season traditionally begins the day after
Thanksgiving and concludes at the end of the calendar year; and
WHEREAS, The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is requesting that the
City Commission ask the Miami Parking Authority (MPA) to establish a free parking
program on Saturdays and Sundays during the holiday shopping season at all of its
garages and surface lots within the CBD boundaries; and
WHEREAS, the dates of the holiday season free parking shall be limited to:
November 24-25, December 1-2, 8-9, 15-16, 22-23, 2007; and
WHEREAS, the MPA will lose some revenue on these dates, but can make up
that revenue and more from future increased weekend parking usage when residents
and visitors discover the diverse offerings of Downtown's shops, restaurants, services,
arts and culture.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this
Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. MPA is hereby being requested to establish a free parking
program on Saturdays and Sundays during the holiday shopping season consisting of
November 24-25; December 1-2, 8-9, 15-16, 22-23, 2007 at all of its garages and
surface lots within the CBD boundaries; and
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its
adoption and signature of the Mayor.{1 }

{1 } If the Mayor does not sign this resolution, it shall become effective at the end of
ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this
Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City
Commission.
