Subject: Resolution to accept a grant for 16 AmeriCorps*VISTA members to serve at 15 community
based and faith -based organizations throughout the City for a one-year term, helping the agencies build
capacity by working on grant writing, volunteer management and providing linkages to the City's
financial literacy services through the Mayor's Poverty Initiative.
Purpose of Item:
Authorization to accept grant funds, equivalent to $216,000, for the AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers
in Service to America) program from the Corporation for National and Community Service, and
authorization for the City Manager to execute the Memorandum of Agreement, in substantially the
attached form.
Background Information:
In October 2004, the City of Miami Office of Grants Administration submitted an application to the
Corporation for National and Community Service requesting funding for 16 AmeriCorps*VISTA
members to serve in the City, helping to combat poverty by improving the capacity of social service
agencies through resource development, training, volunteer recruitment and retention management,
and media exposure. In addition, AmeriCorps*VISTA members will provide linkages to financial
resources, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Campaign and Individual
Development Accounts (IDAs), available through the City's Department of Community
Development.The City will provide match funding of $80,000 from the Mayor's Poverty Initiative, to
support a VISTA Project Director and other programmatic costs.

year, with the possibility of continued funding for two more years.
