True N+1 Fault Tolerant DC Power System and Inverter Plant ("New UPS")
System Description
The New UPS represents the state of the art in uninterruptible power protection. The on-line operation
provides Valere Modular 48V N+1 DC Power Plant utilizing switch mode, highly efficient rectifiers providing
reliable DC power to the critical DC bus. This plant will be framed for 1200 amps but will never exceed 960
amps to support the whole growth of the Inverter Plant. The DC Power Plant will provide precise DC
distribution to the entire inverter plant sized and cabled for future growth of 21 kVA. The inverter plant will be
scalable to 21 kVA and will include a Maintenance Bypass, Static Switch and AC distribution panel. The
Communications Services Division currently has critical AC loads at each site in the 40 amp range which is
about 7.5kVA. The installation of this plant would allow a more stable environment for the existing loads and
would permit substantial growth in the future. The installation of this plant will also permit using the existing
batteries, which are already configured in 48V strings, to be used in their current configuration. Both the DC
Power Plant and Inverter Plant have state-of-the-art communication capabilities. The more robust XC2000
controller on the DC Power Plant has the capability to pick-up the inverter plant alarms and meters so their
can be a single system interface. We will also recommend adding battery temperature thermal probes and
environmental sensors so we can see the whole picture from a desk -top computer. We will require a static
IP address, subnet mask, server ID, user name and password to set each system up. The XC2000 has
email and cell phone capabilities for both minor and major alarms. All thresholds are user programmable.
DC Power Plant & Inverter Sizing Day 1:
Current AC Load = 40 amps at 120VAC single phase
Inverters required to support 60 amps (40 amps N+1) at 120VAC = 3
48VDC Toad current for three (3) inverters = 265 amps @ 48VDC fully rated
48VDC Toad current for three (3) inverters = 235 amps @ 48VDC 80% loaded
Battery recharge current based on current batteries = 190 amps @ 48VDC
Total Day 1 Plant Current = 425 amps @ 48VDC
Valere X7500 150 amp 48V rectifiers N+1 = (4) 150A rectifiers or 600 amps total
Inverter plant will be framed for the whole 21 kVA and wired accordingly
There will be a bypass and static switch so operation is automatic
AC input to Maintenance Bypass of inverter = 200 amps @ 120VAC (each inverter)
AC input to rectifiers will be (4) 60 amp feeds @ 208VAC single phase
