As a Miami native, I have fond memories of hanging my photographic art exhibits in the now vacant lot next door where the Parkway Theatre once stood. It's time to bring art and beauty back to this wonderful Shenandoah neighborhood. As owner and founder of Sun King Studio established in 1976, I have seen this Historic Coral Way area change immensely over the past three decades and I think I'm pretty well qualified to voice a big "YES!" for "Lumierre". Dear Commissioners of the City of Miami: I write because I care deeply about this city, and very much want to see it grow in a positive and sustainable direction. The hot-headed tone of civic discourse around the critical issues of planned growth, development, and quality of life has become entirely too shrill and mean - spirited, generating more smoke than light. This saddens me, because I love Miami and its vibrant diversity. I am taking the time to write this letter, from my heart, because I am a neighbor of the planned project, and currently plan to remain so for a lifetime, and after careful consideration felt it important to voice my absolute support for the Lumiere project. One need only look around, and experience the strain on our city's infrastructure, to see that there have been liberties taken with the people's rights, and abuses imposed upon all of us by developers who do not care and seem motivated only by greed. This is no such project, and the Palomos do care, very much. Although I am by no means "pro -development," I do recognize the need for more housing less far out from the city's center, and for quality design, and for "human scale" construction that will enhance the city's potential to blossom into an inviting urban village instead of bleak fragmentation. In my view, those privileged enough to already call this neighborhood their own have every right, and in fact a duty, to protect, honor, and safeguard their investment and their way of life. But when that privilege becomes a knee-jerk "NO!" to every innovation proposed, it's most unfortunate. Because the buildings will come, and are not likely to approach the same level of quality as that currently being considered. It could not be more important that we move past the labels, as the "fighting words" they have become, and learn to really communicate with open hearts about things that matter to us all. I could not be more rooted in this immediate area. At the age of 46, I am blessed to have both of my parents (Jerry and Anne Crockett) in good health, still happily marrie d and living in the Roads, in my childhood home. My father's parents, H.B. and Annelise, lived one block away until their deaths, on SW 26 Road, and my grandmother was for many years a well -loved fifth - grade teacher at Coral Way Elementary School. With the exception of my college years at the University of Florida and a subsequent clerkship with the Honorable Justice James C. Adkins of the Florida Supreme Court in Tallahassee, I have always lived in Miami. I have witnessed its changes, and cannot help but love this place, for all of its challenges. It is from that perspective that I respectfully and most humbly request that each of you give this project your focused, unbiased attention, even in the noise and haste that surround the political process. When considered with an open mind, I feel that you may agree that the planned project could not have been designed more conscientously or artistically, and is well -suited in every way as a positive "anchor" for the positive direction in which we would like to see this city head. It is the right thing, at the right time, in the right place. It is a dream that should be realized.
