The MRC recommends approval of agenda item PH.1, renewing the Scavenger water decontamination vessel services contract. According to data submitted by Water Management Technologies, Inc. since the City originally contracted the services 6 years ago, although only working 25 hours per week, the Scavenger vessel has treated 4.68 billion gallons of water through the decontamination system, injected 1.17 billion litters of oxygen into the water, and removed 6,000 cubic yards of debris, including hazards to navigation. These combined efforts resulted in significant improvements to water quality citywide. The MRC is proud to have provided a $25,000 cost -share for the Scavenger's original pilot program, applauds the City for renewing these valuable services citywide, and Miami -Dade County for appropriating an additional $100,000 for additional Scavenger services on the Miami River. In addition, renewal of the Scavenger's services will result in the cleaning of 262 outfalls citywide, consistent with the educational requirements of the National Pollutant Discharge Environmental System (NPDES) Permit.
