Atlanta, Georgia 30303 IN RUIN REFER T0: SER-CRD Mr. Joel Hoffman Executive Director Vizcaya Museum and Gardens 3251 South Miami Avenue Miami, Florida 33129 Dear Mr. Hoffman: } MATIPSIAL ARE })14 SUBMITTED INTO THE PUBLIC RECORD FOR ITEM / a:3 ON 3.aa . rz r This office was recently informed of a proposed development project that could threaten the historic character of Vizcaya, a National Historic Landmark (NHL). Vizcaya is one of three NHLs in Miami -Dade County, and there are only 39 NHLs in the State of Florida. In addition to our national parks, NHLs are considered to be the most important historic properties in the United States. The National Park Service monitors the condition of NHLs because they have national significance in American history, and this office is responsible for monitoring the condition of NHLs in the Southeast Region. Three residential towers over 400 fret tall are proposed for land adjacent to Vizcaya. These new buildings would loom over Vizcaya and its historic gardens, compromising the historic integrity of the property and its environment because the height and scale of the new development is not visually compatible with the historic property, a historic site of national importance. The National Park Service strongly supports local efforts to minimize the impact of adjacent new development on Vizcaya so that the historic character of this NHL, including its vistas, will not be diminished. The National Park Service hopes that local authorities will carefully consider Vizcaya's stitus as a National Historic Landmark and the proposed project's threat to the historic character of Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Please convey our concerns to the Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Miami -Dade County Commissioners. Please contact Ms. Jody Cook, National Historic Landmarks Program Manager, at 404-562-3117, extension 515, or via %Coy PRIDE.' 'NAM ERICA email at <jody cook@nps.gov>, with any questions or if we can provide further support of this effort to protect our national heritage.
