The impact of the proposed project to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is significant and adverse by any measurement. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to saving historic places and revitalizing America's communities. We provide leadership, education, advocacy and resources to people working to preserve and enjoy the places that matter to them. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an irreplaceable part of Miami's history and an equally important part of southern Florida's economy. The economic impact of Vizcaya is tied directly to the quality of the visitor's experience at the site and the authenticity of the site itself. The proposed project at the former Mercy Hospital threatens both the quality of the visitor experience and the authenticity of the site. Vizcaya represents not only a public trust to interpret history but it represents important public and private investment to preserve a National Historic Landmark. Good stewardship of that investment compels the city of Miami to allow the developers of the project and supporters of Vizcaya to reach a compromise that allows for minimal impact to the house and gardens and a reasonable economic return to both entities. Thank you for your attention to this request. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an extraordinary place and deserves an extraordinary effort to reach a satisfactory conclusion to the current dilemma. 300 Grove Bay March 26, 2007 Page 2 Sincerely, John Hildreth Director Southern Office National Trust for Historic Preservation cc: SUBMITTED INTO THE PUBLIC RECORD FOR ITEM ONqo'i.
