HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-07-0058City of Miami Legislation Resolution: R-07-0058 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 07-00103a Final Action Date: 1/25/2007 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO CREATE THE "NEIGHBORS UNITED FOR HOUSING TASK FORCE," AS STATED HEREIN, TO ADDRESS THE CRISIS SURROUNDING THE NEED FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND THE RISE IN HOMELESSNESS IN DISTRICT 5. WHEREAS, the provision of affordable housing is critical; and WHEREAS, there is a critical need to address housing for the homeless community in District 5; and WHEREAS, there is a critical need to identify gaps in the delivery of services to the above mentioned community and determine the current services that are being provided in the area; WHEREAS, there is need to prepare a response to the "Actions and Items" requested by the Umoja Village provided to Commissioner Spence Jones on January 9, 2007; and WHEREAS, there is need to make recommendations to the community and government regarding a proposed resolution to the Umoja Village; and WHEREAS, there is a critical need for the community to work with the City of Miami ("City") to address the acute need for affordable housing and the needs of the homeless; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Manager is authorized{1} to create the "Neighbors United for Housing Task Force" ("Task Force"), to address the crisis surrounding the need for affordable housing and the rise in homelessness in District 5. Section 3. The City Manager is authorized{1} to appoint People United to Lead the Struggle for Equality, Chair of the Task Force, to work with the Liberty City Community Revitalization Trust as it jointly develops a community based approach to address the Umoja Village. Section 4. The Task Force shall make recommendations on how to address the issues, through the City's Affordable Housing Trust and the City Commission. Section 5. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption and signature of the Mayor.{2} Footnotes: {1} The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may be imposed by the City Attorney, including but not limited to those prescribed by applicable City Charter and Code provisions. {2} If the Mayor does not sign this Resolution, it shall become effective at the end of ten calendar days from the date it was passed and adopted. If the Mayor vetoes this Resolution, it shall become effective immediately upon override of the veto by the City Commission.
