Why would you like to serve on the Community Relations Board? I believe the CRB has a role in some of the most important and challenging issues in our community. I hope my skills and interests might allow me to help in refining issues, so as to avoid unnecessary confrontation and in building bridges by focusing on interests and common concerns rather than positions and "stand taking." 2. Can you dedicate at least 10 hours per month to serving on the Community Relations Board? Yes [assuming that the maximum will infrequently be substantially higher than 10- 15 hours/ month] 3. What special skills would you bring to the Community Relations Board? In running the Faculty Senate, I have dealt with what I like to call "herding cats." My legal and diplomatic skills help me in defining issues in a way that facilitates agreement rather than confrontation. It has also given me the comfort to, when necessary, speak truth to power and the judgment to know when (rarely) to use that authority. QUESTIONNAIRE Page two (2) 4. What is your understanding of the role of the Community Relations Board in the City of Miami? I don't see how I could improve on the mission statement at the beginning of this document. I would hope the board and its members, alone and through connections with other community organizations, could find concrete ways to further that mission. For example, they could be involved in various outreach efforts to children and youth, particularly in facilitating outreach that crosses lines of geography, ethnicity, culture, gender, etc. 5. Do you feel that positive inter -group relations can be achieved in the City of Miami? I hope so. And I believe that optimism is a personally and socially valuable attitude. We have moved forward in many ways, including a far lower level of intergroup violence than in our darker moments. But we need to keep this as a focus; the mere absence of hostility is not enough. Rather, people need to make the commitment to positive working together, which requires understanding of different, though not necessarily, inconsistent views, interests, and desires.
