Perhaps the smallest significant piece of
architecture in Miami just opened on Bis-
cayne Boulevard and Northeast 70th Street,
the new Karma car wash and tapas wine bar.
The colorful owner, David Tunnell, a former
executive at MTV Latin America, and the for-
mer owner of Dogma, the gourmet hot dog
stand next door, hired Carlos Touzet to
design a glass cube bar and lounge. Inside,
the furniture is a mixture of Ikea and vintage,
with Murano glass pendant lamps over the
bar and staff aprons designed by Esteban
Cortazar. The place hits all of the design high
notes, from the polished concrete floor to the
color scheme: navy blue, pale aqua and a pur-
ple-y gray Sherwin-Williams color called
Daguerreotype. "It cost close to a million to
build," Tunnell said. "Including bringing in
all the underground services and the recy-
cling system for the car wash." It's a holistic
car wash, you see, and tapas bar. "It's all
organic," he said. Tunnell, after selling the hot
dog stand, became a raw food vegan (no ani-
mal products whatsoever). Because he says
he has to taste whatever he sells of those deli-
cious tapas, we'd say he would now count as
a raw food Brie-gan.
So now you know.
