0 0 Families First -Parent Academy Instructors will hold a workshop series using The
Abecedanan Curriculum "Learning Games", designed to address the stress, i olatror., anki
lack of adequate parenting information and social support That many parents experier,re
The material and format used in "Learning Games" has broad appeal to famtfres from a
wide spectrum of socioeconomic, educational, cultural, and geographic Condit ori;,_ The
content addresses issues that all families face at one lime or another, and can be adapted
to most populations- Courses will be offered for parents of children ages 0-5. These
courses will lake place once every three weeks in each of the following locations_ local
park. pre -identified Child Care Centers and a local library in each of the communities_
Pailicipanls will be recruited in a variety of ways. Recruitment efforts will begin as families
are introduced through prenatal care and early childhood education efforts through and;or
the Healthy Start Coalition. Parents will be made aware of the Parenting Worksnop Series and the Parent and Me classes by the prenatal education outreach staffers that sen:ice thei
targeted areas from both of these programs. The City of Miami will ail,<o work with The
,Parent Academy to recruit parents for this regional version effort.
The Parent Academy will assist by advertising the courses in their course ofter:no
booklets. Courses will be offered at local day care centers tor parents that utilize day Care
services and at City of Miami Parks for parents that slay at home with their children- Day
care teachers and Park Managers wilt be invited to sessions.

Workshop Series. Classes will alternate between Parenting Workshop:, and Parent & Pule
Classes. Every site will have one activity each week - Learning Games Curriculum
(Parenting Workshop), My Gym (Parent & Me Class) or WLRN (Parent & Me Class)
Activities will alternate weekly. The Parent & Me classes will offer vaned opportunities tor
parents to interact with their children while learning about child development and school
readiness. Parent and Me Classes will include music activities. interactive games. story

120 2 Families First Events will be organized on a quarterly basis by the Miami -Darin
Learning Partnership within the targeted areas. Al! participating families will be ,;,, ,it [i to
attend, but the effort will be advertised for the entire community. Events will locus on
cul!urally relevant content focused on quality family time activities with the emphasr or
lschool readiness and family literacy. The Miami -Dade Family Learning Partnership w;li
facilitate the collaboration of community organizations that have demonstrated succer:s
!reaching out to the community, including a strong outreach to the faith -based
!organizations. The Parent Academy will also organize two Families First City -Wide
Ieileris hightrghting family literacy and quality family time. They will lead these events but
twill still work closely with the Miami -Dade Family Learning Partnership and the Program
IDirector to assure that both events will remain aligned with the work being done within the
structure of the program. Transportation will be made available for families registered n
ithe Parenting Workshop Series and the Parent and Me Classes,
