A volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister from Northwestern High School will visit your child afterschool at least once a week. The volunteer will develop a friendship with your child, 'listen to his/her thoughts or feelings, and serve as a role model. During the ;one hour weekly session that your child and his/her volunteer will spend • together, they will cover areas in which ;your child may be having diffi- culty. You can get an application from the Miami Learning Zone Program Director, Aimee Mir. Please give all applications back to Ms. Mir once you fill them out. Chantal Conkling ;'Director of Enrollment «-, - MENTORING RESOURCE CENTER PRESENTS PARENT WORKSHOPS "This year, \Vith funding from The Children's Trust, Big Brothers I3ig Sisters of Greater Miami added a Parent Workshop Series to our pro- grams. We are collaborating with community agencies to provide presentations that cover a variety of topics relevant to positive youth development, healthy family functioning, and personal enrich- ment. We are excited to be partnering again, for the second year, with the City of Miami to provide school - based mentoring to the students of Holmes Elementary. Additionally, we will be bringing our Parent Workshop Series to the Miami Learning Zone's Saturday Academy. BBBS workshops will be held on the third Saturday of each month, with the exception of December. Please see the MLZ Calendar for exact dates and times, as well as the topics that will be discussed. ':h O'JUG COME NATURAL Y ,J Over the past fifteen years, Citizens has designed experiential, multi- lingual education and outreach programs for students, teachers and community organizations, including activities such as community festivals, environmental field trips, curriculum development and trainings, tree plantings, workshops, in -class visits, habitat restorations and the Community Science Workshop. ��orldaf"ro 410�drxpt K/'k\'' The Community Science Workshops mission is to "Expand Knowledge, Thinking, and Imagination with Tools of Discovery and Things to Discover." It creates a safe, informal, and fun space for kids to learn through hands- on activities. Outside the pressures of the formal classroom, students are free to explore and discover the wonders of the natural world in their own community. The Community Science Workshop is part science center, part woodshop, and part nature center in the heart of Miami. It also offers formal experiential science curriculum during school hours designed to compliment classroom lessons.
