Director City Manager Page lof1 Background Information: (Continued) The Department of Fire -Rescue is requesting the purchase of a Fire -Rescue Rapid Response Watercraft ("Firestorm 46") with a pilot house, warranty, and accessories to respond to man-made or natural events in Miami's many waterways. Due to the City's stretch of River frontage, as well as our 20 miles of Biscayne Bay shoreline with its increasing number of high-rises and other locations such as businesses, residences, and vessels, many of which are unreachable to our present first responders via land. Purchasing this 46' aluminum vessel with a 14' beam, 3' draft and a speed of 28 knots, will allow the City's first responders to navigate through Miami's waterways improving response time and allowing them closer proximity to the emergency scene. The benefits to this new equipment are saving lives and property which will also help to keep the cost of insurance to a minimum. The aluminum model was selected because of its durability which allows for quick and easy repairs. The vessel is light weight and allows for greater speed and less fuel consumption compared to a fiberglass boat. This vessel, when complete, will have been put through specialized testing to ensure its rigorousness in a firefighter's harsh environment. The vessel will be free from resonant vibration ("free from vibration detrimental to the fatigue life of the hull structure"). Some of the vessel's standard equipment include: electrical equipment (VHF, GPS, and depth finder), engines (twin caterpillar), water pump (500 gallons per minute), fuel (300 gallons) and generator. Fire will also equip this vessel with other Rapid Response preparation and response equipment purchased through the 2005 UASI grant.
