AN DG- o/Ixh iMITTD =INTO THE PUBLIC RECORD FOR ITEM vzai ON ro-ac-us September 27, 2006 Dear Ms. Eusse: This letter Is written in support of your position that your home at 5850 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami not be considered a contributing structure within the new MIMo Biscayne Boulevard Historic District. As you know, I strongly support the designation of the Miami Modem historic district, and believe that it is an important foundation for the area's future development The unusual heritage of modern buildings on Biscayne Boulevard is deserving of protection. My position on your home relates purely to the Circumstances of its urban and architectural qualities in relationship with the larger goals of the district Also, prior to the designation of the district, Man T. Shulman Architect, PA had designed a new residential building for you on the site, and so this office is familiar with the property. 5850 Biscayne fronts on Biscayne Boulevard, so I believe the property was rightly included in the district. However the house does not face the boulevard, and is oriented instead toward 58e Street. The side facade of the house faces the boulevard. In this way, it does not really contribute to the boulevard's urban character, except by the casual proximity of its side facade. Although the current structure is a fine home, I do not believe it contributes to the continuity of character established by the commercial modem structures that were the main subject of the District's creation. Were the subject home located in the Momingside Historic District, It would fit well with the character of the surrounding homes. By maintaining the property in the district, it will be subject to the review of the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board. I believe strongly in the ability of the HEP Board to fairly judge the appropriateness of any new structure for this site, and to take into consideration its historic context I believe the subject property should be designated non-contributing.
