Project Narrative/Description
A significant testament to the history of the segregation era in Miami, this building played a key role in the education of African -Americans. It was built in 1941 on
land donated by Dana Dorsey, one of the most influential citizens in the Overtown community, and designed by Feist and Steward, one of the most prominent
architectural firms in Miami at the time. The building is in a state of disrepair, vacant, and boarded up. GOB funding will make possible the restoration of this
significant landmark and its use as a library and archives of African -American history in Miami.
GOB Total Funding Allocation Narrative/Description
With our initial grant of $50,000- from the Miami -Dade County Urban Task Force, we have been able to secure the building, repair most of the damage caused by
years of abandonment and will complete part of the restoration, both inside and out, in the next two or three months. The GOB Funding Allocation will allow us to
complete the restoration, including mechanical, plumbing, and electrical work. All of the funds will go into the construction and construction related activities.
GOB 2005 Funding Allocation Narrative/Description
The 2005 GOB funds will be used to complete the above restoration. The initial grant of $50,000- from the Urban Task Force on Econominc Revitalization is being
spent to secure the building, repair the serious damage as well as begin the construction renovation of the building.
