Authorizing an Agreement
with Museum
of Science, Inc.
City Commission Meeting
of March 9, 2006
The Department of Parks and Recreation respectfully requests your approval and action
of the Miami City Commission by a 4/5ths affirmative vote, after an advertised public
hearing, ratifying, approving and confirming the City Manager's recommendation and
finding that competitive negotiation methods are not practicable or advantageous
regarding the agreement for educational and park services and activities described below.
The Department respectfully requests such recommendation, finding and authorization in
order to proceed with executing an agreement with Museum of Science Inc., a Florida
not -for -profit corporation, to award funds in the amount of $69, 731 with an option to
renew for two additional one-year periods for the provision of science driven instruction,
family -day field trips and other like activities to be provided at five of the City's parks,
African Square, Duarte, Jose Marti, Shenandoah, and Williams in conjunction with a
grant from the Children's Trust called the Out -of -School "Hear of Out Parks" grant.
Museum of Science, Inc. will provide science activities through engaging software and
hands-on experiments to stimulate the participating children's curiosity in the field of
science and increase their understanding of the natural world. Miami Museum of Science
is the sole provider of said services.
Over the past ten years the Museum of Science, Inc. has trained over 16,000 teachers
throughout the State of Florida in science concepts and the dissemination of technology
in the classroom. The Museum of Science also over the past ten years has operated,
simultaneously, twelve different programs for children. The Children's Trust awarded
this grant with the approval and expected participation of Miami Museum of Science.
For the reasons stated above, as required by section 18-86(a)(3)(c) of the Code of the City
of Miami, the Department of Parks and Recreation (1) recommends the execution of an
agreement with Museum of Science Inc. for a contract period beginning August 1st, 2005
through May 31St 2006, with a renewal option, and (2) finds that competitive negotiated
methods are not practicable or advantageous for the provision of said services to the City.
If these recommendation and findings meet with your approval, please indicate by
signing below. The legislation item will be placed on the agenda for the March 9, 2006
City Commission meeting.
