Here is the information you requested regarding the marker. Please understand that this is simply for my application to the state. The state may choose to change any of it to fit their guidelines. Title of the Marker: The Flesicher Studio in Miami Location: (Approximately) 1788 Delaware Parkway. Purpose of the Marker: To educate the public about this little-known yet highly influential studio. The state marker system also doesn't have any markers concerning Florida's rich history in film, so it'd be a unique way to highlight our city's place in American culture. Permission Needed: The Florida Department of Historical Resources states that they require a document "signed by the owner of the property where the marker will be placed". As the property is owned by the city/county, the commissioner's permission would be needed (i.e. Commissioner Gabela). I would need a signed document stating that you give permission for the installation of a historical marker concerning the Fleischer Studio in your district at the above listed address, or approximately near the site. Proposed Wording of the Marker: (Please note that, like everything previously mentioned, this is subject to change as the state seese fit) In 1938, brothers Max and Dave Fleischer moved their pioneering animation studio from New York to this site following a series of conflicts with unions. The Fleischer Studio films had already achieved international success for their unique blend of surrealism, expressionism, and adult themes with characters such as Koko the Clown, Betty Boop, and Popeye the Sailor, and this state-of-the-art studio was built to accommodate for an increased demand for their films and attract a film industry to Miami. Here, the Fleischers employed 760 artists producing one -reel Popeye short films, as well as two feature-length films: Gulliver's Travels (1939) and Mr. Bug Goes to Town (1941). In 1941, the studio became the first to bring Superman to the screen. Despite the success of the Popeye and Superman series, the Fleischer Studio was in financial straits, and the relationship between the Fleischer brothers had deteriorated severely. In 1942, following the failure of Mr. Bug Goes to Town, the Fleischer's distributor, Paramount Pictures, closed the studio. The Flesicher's films, many of which were made here, are some of the most influential and celebrated animated films in history and continue to entertain generations of audiences. In addition to this, I would appreciate it if you could see if the public works department in the city would be able to install the sign. Please let me know if you have any questions, as I will be glad to answer!
