Thompson City Clerk Date: December 16, 2005 Subject: Commission on the Status of Women References: January 12, 2006 Agenda Enclosures: List of members The Commission on the Status of Women was created to serve in an advisory capacity to the City Commission, including advising on any possible barrier which may impede the participation of women in City sponsored programs and activities; to work toward legislation granting women equality before the law; to inspire in women the desire for self-improvement and pride of being, regardless of age, marital status, race, color or creed; to seek for every woman the opportunities equal to her potential and responsibility; to seek opportunities for and to encourage the active involvement of women in matters pertaining to community progress; to encourage capable women in roles of leadership. Seven members' terms expired on November 16, 2005: • Chairman Gonzalez has two nomination for: 1. seat currently held by Pauline Ramos, who has exceeded the number of absences allowed per City Code (6 absences in 2005) and who has served for more than eight consecutive terms. Section 2-885(b) of the Code states that no board member shall serve more than eight consecutive years on any one board. This provision may be waived by a unanimous (5/5) vote of the City Commission. 2. seat currently held by Constance Johnson. • Commissioner Sanchez has two nominations for vacant seats created because both Mary Racilia Smith and Graciela Solares have resigned • Commissioner Michelle Spence -Jones has two nominations for: 1. vacant seat created because Karen Cartwright resigned; and 2. seat currently held by Nancy Dawkins, who has exceeded the number of absences allowed per City Code (5 absences in 2005). • Mayor Diaz has one appointment for seat currently held by Gepsie Metellus, who has exceeded the number of absences allowed per City Code (6 absences in 2005). For your convenience, we are including a copy of the current membership of said board. By copy of this memorandum, we are requesting the Agenda Office place this issue on the January 12, 2006 Commission agenda. This matter was deferred from the November 17, 2005 Commission meeting.
