SEPTEMBER 2e. 200E SE Client Name: Ad Number: CITY OF MIAMI-CITY CLERK Insertion Number: rst 0 Q 0 fn a) cD a 0 U DATELINE: PARADISE In a high-speed world, slow and steady holds fast was driving north on U.S.' I just leaving Key West. sing at a moderate 40 mph and enjoying the scen- ery. Cars were zipping past me like I was sitting at a parking meter doing a crossword puz- zle. It was nearly noon, and thc morning off -to -work and ol fic was longgone, but the volume oftraffic was still brisk In the dis- tance, a lime- grcen sports jacket at the ode of the road caught my eye. As I got closer. l could ee that the man wearing it as elderly and stooped. and was making an attempt to cross the only artery carrying traffic in and out of the Keys. The man had a canvas hook bag that swung in ono hand, and a stack of newspapers clutched to his chest in the other. He appeared to have just exited a convenience ore/g station near the heavily trafficked intersection. I pulled into the station to fill my tank before continuing my journey to the wilds of mainland h'lorida. l saw that the old man was windswept and sweating as he stood by the side of the road under the pulsating, maize -yellow sun. waiting fora break in traffic. Each passing vehicle caused a small tornado of road grit to swirl aroutsd him. A steady stream of vehicles blurred the landscape, and the man's head swung slowly from side to side, looking north. then south. like an ancient metronome that kept a slow. 14 (11L MIAMI-DADE motion cadence to the rhythm of the road. He ventured a slow step or two onto thc highway, only to turn and walk ponderously back to the roadside. A car zipped by, the driver's hand glued to the horn, blaring his annoyance at the old man's back. Crossing this piece of road would be a challenge fora younger. nimbler person. The Boy Scout in me surfaced, and I approached the man and asked him if I could help him across the highway. 'l'VE GOT IT COVERED' The man appeared to be even older than I had first thought. His face was a road map of purple veins and dark brown blotches; white puffs of hair sprouted from his ears like smoke from. a chimney. He was wearing a crisp straw hat, cinched around his chin with a leather thong. His head never stopped its pendulum swing, alert for a break in the steady flow of vehicles. At first! thought he had not heard me. But when he finally looked at me,' knew better. His eyes were as blue as the summer southern sky an., twinkled with a young man's determination. 'Thanks. Rut I've got it cov- ered." he responded. His voice was strong and steady. A distinct Irish brogue added a touch of the lepre- chaun and belied his physical appearance.' had no doubt that the man did have it cov- ered. his cache of newspapers his only armor against obliv- ion. I was hack pumping gas when the man made his move. Struggling with utility bills? It was like watching a turtle cross the road. Cars and tracks I whizzed by the slow -moving figure that trudged into traffic,' unconcerned, at a slow -and - steady -wins -the -race pace, a lime -green tortoise upon the dull, gray road. There was no dash for safety, no appearance of con- cern as the man slowly made it halfway across U.S.1 and paused fora moment in the turning lane, his rumpled jacket Clapping as the river of steel ignored him and contin- ued to stream by. PATIENCE PAYS OFF I thought it amazing that in the rush of the day no one had slowed, or put thew flashers on or waved out a car window to slow down other drivers. I shook my bead as l saw sev- eral cars with bumper stickers that admonished others to "Slow down, this ain't the mainland" speed by. Finally, a woman in an Stn' waved wildly to alert ether drivers that she had stopped. The now of traffic heading south paused for a minute. and the man con- tinued slowly and safely across the highway. U.5.1 went back to its fre- netic self, and traffic picked up speed in both directions. The old man put his hook hag down and waved to me, his newspaper.“till held tight. There seemed to be a spring to his step when he turned and continued on his way. With the luck of a lepre- chaun. he indeed had it cov- ered.
