Thompson City Clerk ...by PBtri May; 07Sep 2006 Mayor Manny Diaz Mayor Diaz himself has repeatedly emphasized the importance of good planning and keeping the shoreline as Chicago has...construction away from the shorefirre. Our Mayor has voiced his admiration of Chicago's shoreline protection at several public arenas, including Miami 21 charettes. YES! ...build, build, build... away from the shoreline. Chicago's Burnham Plan — has preserved the shoreline, since 1909. *** Miami can begin shoreline preservation today *** Responsibility— Conscience - Planning with Vision — embrace the opportunity! As Commissioners, grasp this fully...vision needs to be for the long-term...the waterfront lands must be kept for open spaces and/or low-rise projects that attract and keep the people coming back for more! Our open downto wn shoreline is what gives Miami its MAGIC... for all the people! *** Long-term effects — it's about tomorrow ... THE REALITY: Changing the zoning of Herald's Parcels 1 and 3 from the present CU-2 (under 120 feet, no more than about 10 stories), to SD-6 (unlimited height permitted) would tragically allow up to 5 skyscraper towers to be built on this magnificent shoreline at the entrance to our historic Venetian Causeway Bridge (now or in the future)...there are approximately 5 total Acres on these Herald parcels on Biscayne Bay. SD-6 would allow 1 skyscraper of unlimited height with approximately 500 units each tower on EACH of the 5 Acres! 5 towers in total along our shoreline. A massive wall of steel and glass along Biscayne Bay...forever. Last chance —"seize the day" ... TODAY is the threshold to our City's History There is genuine enthusiasm for growth and development...away from our downtown shoreline. These are the last lands on the water allowing low-rise or open spaces...the existing zoning is precisely the appropriate use of this land along the water so as to preserve the shoreline. Again, granting the zoning change to Parcels 1 and 3 on the water will allow developers to erect up to 5 massive towers having no height limitation (now or in the future) on this Herald shoreline. Allow these lands to retain the existing zoning.
