A) How many people received the training this project proposes in the most recent 12 month time
period for which you have data (include the dates)? From January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2004 zero fire
rescue personnel have received training regarding this proposal.
B) - How many people do you estimate will successfully complete this tralnin.j in the 12 months after
training begins? All 458 paramedics will successfully complete this training.
C) If this training is designed to have an impact on injuries, deaths, or other emergency victim data,
provide the impact data for the 12 months before the training and project what the data should be in the
12 months after the training, BEFORE: In 2004 we handfed 16,200 ALS patients of which 388 were in need of
intubation. Of these, 251 were successfully intubated via an endotracheal tube, 87 received a combi tube and 42
received no tube (left with an unprotected airway). AFTER: Due to advance patient assessment and hands on
skills review that our employees will receive using the SimMan manikin, we estimate that successful intubations
will improve by at least 20% which will result in the following numbers: an improvement by raising successful
endotracheal intubations to 301, an improvement by reducing combi tube intubations to 54, and unsuccessful
intubations to 25 (no tubes).
D) Explain the derivation of figures. We believe a portion of our combi tube intubations and our
unsuccessful intubation attempts are due to insufficient skills training by the paramedic. By assuring each
paramedic receives proper annual training on their ALS assessment and intubation skills, we believe that
successful intubations will improve 20%,
E) Integration into agency's five year plan: This project integrates well into the Five Year Strategic Plan of
the City of Miami. Specifically it addresses the Department's Goal #13 to "Improve operations throughout the
department by researching and implementing new techniques and/or equipment to effect better delivery of
service and quality patient care."
