Subject: Resolution to apply for grant funds for Flagami Reforestation Program
Purpose of Item:
Resolution authorizing the City Manager to submit an application for grant funding to the State of
Florida, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Forestry in an amount not to
exceed $75,000 for replanting, reforesting and/or replacing of trees that were damaged and/or
destroyed in the City due to Hurricane Frances and Jeanne. Also authorization is needed for the
allocation of required matching funds for twenty-five percent (25%) of the project in an amount not to
exceed $18,750 coming from Public Works General Account Number 001000.311003.6.340.
Background Information:
Certain public right of way sectors in the City currently devoid of trees. During two tropical storm
systems; Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne, Flagami's tree canopy was diminished. This
section's tree canopy consisted of weak, damaged, diseased trees or trees with weak root systems. 200
trees toppled over and obstructed the public rights -of -way. Losing these trees has compromised this
section devoid of significant tree protection/canopy from impending hurricane/storm events. For this
reason, the City of Miami is requesting a grant in the amount of $75,000 from the Urban and
Community Forestry Grant Program. Grant as well as matching funds in the amount of $18,750 will
be used to replant trees in this area. A total of $93,750 dollars will be used for this project.
