Ms. Ronda A. Vangates, Esq.
A local newspaper reporter covering
a graduation ceremony, asked a woman in
attendance, to explain tho apparent dogged•
determination of one of the graduates who
had become a mother at the age of sixteen
but who went an to receive her Juris
Doctorate degree earlier in the day, when
asked how, the woman simply replied:
"Ronda is obligated to succeed"
Undoubtedly, these five supple
words amalgamated and uttered by Sarah
Nell Harris-Vangates, mother of the
graduate, has provided the necessary
guidance and support that has allowed
Attorney Ronda A, Vangates to flourish
without restraint, as she adheres to the
admonishment that, "to much .ins given, much
is required."
Ronda A. Vangates, Esq., who
currently serves as a member of the Senior
Staff in her capacity as Assistant Special
Counsel to the newly minted, Miami.l)ade
County Superintendent of Schools, Dr.

framed and analyzed both legislative and

University, Shepard Broad Law Center,
where she was recognized for her
commitment to excellence, by being selected
to take part in the Minority Participation in
Legal Education Scholarship Program
(MPLE).
Rooker T. Washington (1856-1915)
once said, "[Sluccess is to be measured not so
much by the position that one has reached in
life as by the obstacles which one has
overcome while trying to succeed." This
philosophical identification of the attributes
of success+, truly encapsulates the mantra
that Attorney Vangates, who bocame the
earthly vehicle for the rpintua1 delivery of
God's grcateet gift at the age of sixteen, is
the loving mother to Ashley Cryetal Renee,
now seventeen years old. Ashley's arrival
prompted Attorney Vangates to begin to
think heynnd high school to a life that would
support, the ever growing needs of her
daughter — needs that could only be met by
obtaining the requisite education and
experience.
Aehloy's willingness to share her
'Mom" with tho community, allowed
Attorney Vangates to accept without
hesitation, the position of Intergovernmental

only a significant milestone in Attorney
Vangates' career but also added to the pages
of municipal history, when she became the
first African -American in the history of the
City of Miami, to hold such a pivotal and
coveted leadership position.
After her adventurous and most
challenging tenure with Mayor Carollo,
Attorney Vangates was asked to serve as
Special Assistant to then City Manager and
now member of the Miami -Dade Board of
County Commissioners, the Honorable
Carlos Gintenez, As Special Assistant to the
City Manager, Attorney Vangates
coordinated the development and
implementation of the City of Miami's
Legislative Agenda pursued on federal, state
and local levels of government along with the

responsibility to "give back" to those who
provide encouragement and support, serves
on the Board of Directors for the Belaionte
Tacolcy Center located in hor childhood
neighborhood of Liberty City, as well as the
Overtown Youth Center, the brain child of
Miami Heat star, Alonzo Mourning and
philanthropist Martin "Marty" Margulies
and the Carrie P. Meek Foundation.
Not only is Attorney Vangates
committed to the advancement of viable
social service programs but she is also
committed to economic development,
evidenced by her nomination by Board
Chairperson Ms. Adrienne Arsht, to serve on
the Board of Ihrectors for Total Bank, a
financial institution with assets numbering
over seven -hundred million dollars.
Attorney Vangates, who was sworn -
in to the Florida Bar by the Honorable
Manuel "Manny" Diaz, Mayor of the City of
Miami and a graduate of the Greater Miami
Chamber of Commerce Leadership Miami
program, decided after dutifully serving the
residents of the City of Miami, she would
again expand her sphere of knowledge by
accepting the position of Chief of Policy end
Legislative AIla,re to the former Chairperson
of tho Miami -Dade Board of County
Commissioners and prolific community
loader, the Honorable Barbara Carey-Shuler,
As Chief of Policy and Legislative
Affairs, Attorney Vangates was responsible
for the management of the commission
docket as well as providing keen analysis of

Wilkie D. Ferguson Bar Association, has to
date, experienced what can only be
considered a unique and cherished blessing
that has allowed her to utilize her talents
and skill•set to provide a voice for those in
her community who are economically
depressed and socially disenfranchised.
These blessings, thereby, permit and dare
the next generation to dream beyond their
geographical boundaries and hope with tho
widest lens of possibility, knowing fully, that
they too, are "obligated to succeed'
