The United States Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, has approved our application for funding under the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants in the amount of $95,000. Coverdell funds are to be used to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner services and/or to eliminate backlogs in the analysis of forensic evidence, including controlled substances, firearms examinations, forensic pathology, latent prints, questioned documents, toxicology, and trace evidence. To accomplish the above, the Miami Police Department's (MPD) Technical Services (TS) Unit will purchase a Motorola Omnitrack AFIS Equipment. This equipment will help reduce the backlog of latent fingerprint cases to be analyzed, and allow the TS Unit to use its human resources in a more effective manner. The cost for the before -mentioned equipment is $115,000. Therefore, MPD's cash match is $20,000. These funds will come from the TS Unit. Enclosed is the award package received from the Department of Justice. Also enclosed is a copy of the grant application. Should you have any questions, please see me.
