Director ity Manager Page 1 of 1 AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY FORM (CONTINUEDI Background Information: The CHOICE Program, based on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBS) model, is a collaboration between the Miami Police Department, Police Athletic League and Miami Rescue Mission to provide strategies that promote positive growth and development among in -school youth with risk factors that increase their potential for school failure and involvement in delinquent activities. The Police Department's Gang Detail will facilitate and guide the CHOICE Program, provide direct outreach to families, lead communication with its partners, mentor youth, conduct substance abuse prevention activities, host field trips, manage representation on advisory boards as needed, and act as the project manager. The Police Athletic League will provide community youth with after school tutoring, FCAT guidance and homework assistance and recreational activities, Tuesdays through Fridays, during the academic year, and each weekday during the summer session. The Miami Rescue Mission Community Activity Center will provide use of their facilities on Saturdays, as well as, a Counselor/Case Manager to oversee the mentoring program. The grant will pay for officers' overtime, contractual services, program equipment and supplies, field trips, operational expenses, training/seminars, and background screening of program participants by the Department of Juvenile Justice. The City's in -kind contribution consists of use of facilities ($15,131), training/seminars ($1,212), and staff travel ($1,315). The grant is for a period of one-year, from July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006.
