AIDS TO NAVIGATION IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT
Project Description:
;Replacement of three (3) City -maintained lighted channel marker platforms at Brennan's Channel,
located at Dinner Key, Miami. The existing structures are in a state of advanced deterioration due to
age and weather conditions. Each lighted channel marker platform consists of a cluster of four pilings
braced together; aluminum access ladder; wooden platform; beacon light; batteries; solar charging
panel; and day marker signs.
The City of Miami maintains aids to navigation for two channels connecting the Atlantic Intracoastal
Waterway and the Dinner Key area of Coconut Grove, in Miami. These channels (known as The Sea
Plane Channel and Brennan's Channel) service thousands of transient and local vessels annually from
the area's several wet slip and dry storage marinas, and Brennan's Channel is the main conduit to the
AICW for vessels utilizing the City of Miami's Seminole Public Boat Ramp. The City -maintained day
markers and light platforms are crucial to the safe navigation of these vessels to and from the AICW,
The City has recently replaced three (3) day marker pilings and approximately forty (40) old,
deteriorated day marker signs throughout both channels, utilizing City funds and City personnel to
complete the work. The extent and cost of the proposed project necessitate this request for grant
funding in this case.
Project Location:
The channel marker platforms are located in Biscayne Bay just to the south and east of Dinner Key
Marina, which is located at Statute Mile 1095 of the FAICW (geographic coordinates 25.44N /
80.14W). The proposed project entails the replacement of the Marker 1 Platform (located at the
entrance to the channel from the AICW) and the Marker 13 Platform and Marker 16 Platform (located
at the west end of the channel).
Project Cost (preliminary):
With the assistance of marine contractors, the City has prepared a preliminary cost estimate for the
replacement of the three existing lighted channel marker platforms in Brennan's Channel. The City
would provide staging area for the contractor and materials, additional vessels, and labor to assist in
the completion of the project. The project cost per lighted channel marker platform is as follows:
1. Pull and replace four (4) 45' Greenheart Pilings (16" diameter); construct cross -bracing and light
platform: $5,000
2. One (1) Aluminum Access Ladder: $300
3. L.E.D. Beacon light; batteries/watertight container; solar charging panel: $1,100
4. Replace two (2) 48" reflective coated day marker signs: $195
Total Projected Cost / Platform: $6,595
