Dr Morris Johnson A Message from the Vice President, NANA Board of Directors Since its inception nine years ago, NANA, under its Executive Director Leroy Jones, its staff and active general membership, has made praiseworthy strides towards the eco- nomic development of habitually neglected sectors of the Miami -Dade Community. Their numerous achievements in networking with City and County government, the acquisition of a range offinancial assistance programs, and the restoration of a number of small businesses in underserved communities reflect and serve as a model of grassroots organiza- tion and leadership. This concept was later ex- panded to include other 'mom & pop' busi- nesses. One of our primary goals is to assemble a Wholesale Distribution Center (WDC). The WDC will offer goods at competitive prices and provide on site technical assistance. We are funding by Miami -Dade County and the City of Miami, among others, and, therefore, provide our services free of charge to members. We assist businesses with the following: • Technical Assistance. The Mom And Pop Small Business Grant Program was created to provide financial and technical. assis- tance to qualified small businesses that are approved for ftmding. This program has allowed small owned and operated businesses the opportunity to interact with local government under favorable conditions, and this relationship will ultimately bridge the gap between the two entities. • The program provides financial assistance to further the economic viability of recipi- ents. Funding can be used to purchase equip- ment, supplies, advertising/marketing, inven- tory, building liability insurance, security sys- tems and to make minor renovations. • Technical assistance is made available to small businesses in order to create a better working and business environment, promote economic development opportunities, edu- cate owners about various county -funded programs and projects, form/foster better working relationships among small business owners, retain and eventually create more jobs, offer the necessary training that smal I business owners so desperately need to be- come more efficient and competitive, etc. The program has grown each year and is now being offered countywide. As a result, we recognize that the needs of each district are different and our goal is to address this diversity. Please be sure to pick up the appropriate application. In order to receive the correct guidelines and be considered for funding, you must apply in the district where your business is lo- cated. The program was developed because of her sincere desire to address the State of Emer- gency in her district, which is the most underserved area ofMiami-Dade County. Atotal of$50,000 was made available for small businesses in District 3. It was stipulated that the funds could be used for busi- ness activities only. As a result oftheproparn's suc- cess, an additional $22,000 was added to the initial total. FY 2001/2002: Commissioners Donin Rolle (District 2) and Bruno Barreiro (District 5) provided $150,000 each for businesses in their respective districts. Over 60 busi- nesses received funding through the program and the name was changed appropriately to the Mom And Pop Small Business Grant Program. FY 2002/2003: Commissioners Barbara Carey-Shuler (District 3), Dorrin Rolle (District 2), Bruno Barreiro (District 5), Jimmy Morales (District 7) and Dennis Moss (District 9) approved a combined total ofone mil- lion dollars for the program. This amount was dis- tributed to more than 177 qualified businesses in their respective drs' tricts. FY 2003/2004: Since the popularity of the program increased con- siderably, it was expanded to include all 13 districts and is now acknowledged as a countywide pro- gram. A total of $1.3 million was allocated to the Mom And Pop Small Business Grant Program for 18 19 9 JIIBINIONIMMINWIlaredifoiliiiifiiit MOM AND 4Brief History (cant) distribution during the fiscal, year and more than 350 business owners benefited directly. Grant guidelines allowed for more flexibility and businesses were al- lowed to use the funding for the following; purchase inventory/supplies, business equipment, physical marketing/advertising, security systems, commer- cial liability insurance, and minor interior/exterior renovations. FY 2004/2005: The program is well established and has been suc- cessful in receiving General Funds again. Recipi- ents will have access to the same amount of funding ($I .3 million) as in the previous year. NANA, as the program originator, continues to play an integral part and provides technical assistance to recipients, while working closely with the districts, Selection Committee Members and the Miami - Dade County Task Force on Urban and Economic Revitalization to help facilitate the overall process.
