Resolution
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and the City Commission adopt
the Resolution to accept $225,474.00 from the State of Florida Refugee Services Program
by entering into a memorandum of understanding with the South Florida Workforce.
These funds will be used to provide outreach, assessment, information, referral,
permanent housing subsidies, and emergency shelter to released Mariel Detainees who
are homeless.
BACKGROUND
On January 15th, 2005 the Supreme Court of the United States of America ruled that
Mariel Refugees who had committed crimes in the United States could no longer be held
in detention indefinitely. The State of Florida has allocated funds for those released
detainees who are homeless for housing and placement assistance. The City of Miami
Homeless Program was chosen to receive $225,474.00 to provide housing assistance to
this population. With the passing of this resolution, the City's Homeless Program will
immediately begin providing said services to Released Mariel Refugee Detainees.
