City of Miami Legislation Resolution Enactment Number: R-24-0163 City Hall 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, FL 33133 www.miamigov.com File Number: 15911 Final Action Date:4/25/2024 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION EXPRESSING ITS UNWAVERING SUPPORT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND CONDEMNING ACTS OF AGGRESSION BY THE TERRORIST ISLAMIC STATE OF IRAN AND ITS TERRORIST PROXIES; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE OFFICIALS STATED HEREIN. WHEREAS, the City of Miami ("City") has long cherished its relationship with the State of Israel, recognizing our shared commitment to democracy, freedom, and the rule of law; and WHEREAS, the City acknowledges the State of Israel as a beacon of stability and democracy in the Middle East and a vital partner in technological innovation and security; and WHEREAS, the City is home to a diverse community that includes a vibrant Jewish population with deep cultural and familial ties to the State of Israel; and WHEREAS, the City is alarmed by the escalating aggression towards the State of Israel from the terrorist Islamic State of Iran, which poses a grave threat to international peace and security; and WHEREAS, around midnight on April 13, 2024, the terrorist Islamic State of Iran and its terrorist proxies, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, among others, launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, involving over three hundred (300) drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles, primarily intercepted by Israeli defense systems with international assistance, showcasing a serious disregard for human life and an escalation in regional tensions; and WHEREAS, the City condemns in the strongest terms the belligerent actions of the terrorist Islamic State of Iran and its terrorist proxies, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, among others, whose attacks on Israeli civilians and territory are unacceptable and constitute acts of terrorism; and WHEREAS, the City, as a Sister City to the cities of Beersheba and Ramat HaSharon in Israel, stands in solidarity with its Sister Cities and the State of Israel in their right to self- defense and supports their efforts to protect their citizens from such unwarranted and unprovoked acts of aggression; and WHEREAS, the City urges the United States Government and international community to join in condemning the terrorist Islamic State of Iran for their acts of aggression against the State of Israel and to hold them accountable for their actions; and WHEREAS, global leaders, including those from the European Union and the United States, have condemned Iran's actions and have reiterated their commitment to Israel's security, reflecting the international concern over potential further escalation and the necessity for peace; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are adopted by reference and incorporated as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby expresses its unwavering support for the State of Israel and its right to exist in peace and security. Section 3. The City Commission calls upon the United States Government and the international community to take immediate and decisive action to prevent further acts of aggression by the terrorist Islamic State of Iran and its terrorist proxies. Section 4. The City Commission reaffirms its commitment to the safety and security of the Jewish community in Miami and to the protection of all citizens from the threat of international terrorism. Section 5. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to the President of the United States, the United States Congress, the Governor of Florida, the Miami - Dade Legislative Delegation, and the Consul General of Israel in Miami. Section 6. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
