Re: Recommendation for Denial of Appeal on the Issued Class II
Special Permit for Point Park
Dear Zoning Board:
The Miami River Commission (MRC) respectfully recommends denial
of the appeal on the issued Class II Special Permit for Point Park,
located on the Miami River's north shore. Point Park has been
discussed at numerous public hearings over the past 6 years, and is
widely supported by the community. The new riverfront park is
recommended in the MRC's award winning strategic plan, The Miami
River Corridor Urban Infill Plan.
On July 25, 2002, the City Commission unanimously rezoned the site
to Parks and Recreation. On June 24, 2004 the City Commission
unanimously approved Point Park's submerged land lease with the
Florida Department of Environmental Protection. It is my
understanding that all necessary permits for the park have been issued,
and the shoreline restoration is scheduled to break ground this spring.
The MRC commends the City of Miami for moving forward with the
creation of this new riverfront greenspace.
