Captain Joyce,
As you know the American Heart Association strongly encourages public access
defibrillation programs. We believe that quicker emergency care for cardiac arrest
victims could save up to 50,000 lives a year.
With over 2.1 million residents, Miami -.Dade County is a prime target for the American
Heart Association's focus of implementing Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs j.
The American Heart Association does not stand alone in our mission for county -wide
AED deployment. Several partners in the community include, University of Miami
Center for .Research in Medical Education, Miami -Dade County Health Department,
Baptist Health Systems, Coral Gables Fire Department, and Hialeah Fire Department.
The City of Miami Fire Rescue and Miami -Dade County Fire Rescue are the ideal
partners to roll out a comprehensive AED program. With the support of the medical
directors of both systems, Dr. Kathy Shrank and Dr. Donald Rosenberg, the quality of the
AED program will serve as a model for other Florida cities.
It has been an honor to work with the City of Miami Fire Rescue and Miami -Dade Fire
Rescue over the past years to achieve our common goal of increasing public access
defibrillation programs. The American Heart Association looks forward to working
closely with the proposed AED project in the city and county.
The American Heart Association would like to offer any support we can provide in order
to secure funding to increase the availability of a quality AED program, which will
ultimately save the lives of countless Miami resident.
